Craft of the Week Club- Week 11

When Sarah at Plainsong came up with the idea of having a Craft Club designed for ‘craft challenged mums’ I thought I’d found my niche. In honour of the Month of the Most Holy Rosary we designed a rosary poster. Materials needed are: Scrapbook sheets or posterboard. Paper punch (circle shape)and cardstock or crepe paper Glue Toothpicks and cotton thread Holy Card or ‘google image’ To begin the craft you need to punch out 59 circles with the paper punch. If you don’t have cardstock you can use any colour paper, we preferred blue and turned the circles over to the white for the ‘Our Father’s’ For the little fingers…

    Redwall Abbey

For a number of years now the dc have been avid Redwall fans. Not only do we have the entire set of Brian Jacques’ books but they are collecting ‘extras’ as they each want their own set. A couple of years ago their friends also caught the Redwall bug. One holidays, friends decided to host a ‘Redwall Feast’. Excitement was high as we outfitted everybody in costumes. We included characters such as Rakkety Tam, Martin the Warrior, Tess the Churchmouse and Prince Charming made a lovely Log-a-Log. Bows were made and archery skills were sharpened. Many a visit was made to the Redwall Kitchen for recipes. We made a Hot…

    Raymond Moore – RIP

Raymond Moore, pioneer of the homeschooling movement has died. What a debt we owe to him and his wife Dorothy. Raymond and Dorothy Moore have been very influential in our family. Way back before children the Moore’s played a big part in my desire to homeschool. I devoured many of their books. It was to their writing and research I looked to for guidance in the early days of our homeschooling. Thank you Dr Moore. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

    Craft of the Week Club

Sarah at Plainsong has started a Craft of the Week Club. It is a fantastic idea for the craft challenged mum. Every week a generous mum shares a craft aimed at the under 9s. The craft is not too complicated, generally made from ready made materials in your home, with a fantastic result. Mary at Our Domestic Church started the club off with ‘foil fish’, these fish are really worthwhile viewing, we went to Our Domestic Church for instructions. Our fish didn’t turn out quite as spectacular. (do they ever?) but the children were very happy with the result, which after all is the important point, is it not? (Yes,…

    A Brother’s Gift of Love

Since we have moved here we have a long list of ‘to do’s’ and a small amount of time. Sounds familiar I’m sure. One of the to do’s was to build a sandpit. The younger girls particularly miss items from our backyard in town. The pool and swings head the list. I thought a sandpit would be a great start to our ‘playground.’ Months had passed though and still no sandpit until… One day Carpenter decided it was a project he could undertake. First he selected a spot under the lone tree near the house that provided shade and wasn’t a gum. I was worried about those ‘widow makers’ dropping…

    Our Montessori Space

After our successful Montessori activites I was inspired to have ‘Montessori shelves’. Our house is small so space is at a premium. Looking around I found a place under the entertainment unit where I could store activities together. First though I needed to pull everything out that was crammed under there. Of course this then created a problem of where to place the games and puzzles removed from the unit. After thinking about it I found a shelf in the linen cupboard that could fit in some of the games if rearranged. Some games were sat on top of a bookcase. Here is my cupboard containing all the manipulatives and…

    Shell Nomenclature

Whilst browsing in the op shop last week I discovered a couple of bags of shells for 50c. I had been debating whether to set up this activity or not after seeing shell nomenclature ‘in action’ on Emily’s blog. I wasn’t too sure if the children would be keen or not. When I found the shells I decided I had found our next activity. With some help from my favourite source of information, my friends at 4Real, I found shell nomenclature cards to print. The children were most interested waiting to see what I was doing. After printing out the cards I laminated them, cut them up and then set…

    Fabric Cards

We’re on a real Montessori roll here in our ‘Home Among the Gum Trees’. On the weekend I started making fabric cards, I was inspired by Emily over at Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy it seemed like a do-able kind of activity to make. I looked around for some card to use as backing and found these index cards they had been sitting in Prince Charming’s shed of all places and he had been asking me to find a use for them, so I did. I then searched the house for different kinds of fabric and came up with eight different kinds, just a perfect number giving the girls a…
