Wattle Gum Curriculum Year 2 Maths

The Maths strands in Year 2 are: numbers, algebra, measurement, space and statistics.

  • Your child will learn how to recognise and order numbers to 1000.
  • To associate collections of Australian coins with their value.
  • To perform simple multiplication, addition and subtraction calculations.
  • To divide collections and shapes into halves, quarters and eighths.
  • Order shapes and objects using informal units.
  • Tell time to the quarter-hour and use a calendar to identify the date and the months included in seasons.

  • Year 2 is building on prior learning and developing reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Maths understanding involves a few approaches: concrete, pictorial and abstract.
  • It is essential to begin with concrete materials in Foundation Maths. Many children will still benefit by using them in Year 2.
  • Concrete materials, including manipulatives, board games and more.

We encourage using:

  • a formal maths program
  • reading living maths books. Maths concepts and skills are integrated within the storylines.
