Wattle Gum Curriculum Year 4 Maths
The Maths strands in Year 4 are: numbers, algebra, measurement, space and statistics.
- Your child will understand place value of tenths and hundredths in decimal form.
- Your child will make connections between fractions and decimals.
- Your child will use mathematical modelling to solve problems involving multiplication problems.
- Your child will approximate perimeters and areas of shapes.
- Your child will compare angles, obtuse, acture, straight etc to a right angle.
- Year 4 is building on prior learning and developing reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Maths understanding involves a developing approach: concrete, pictorial and abstract.
- It is essential to begin with concrete materials in Foundation Maths. Many children will have progressed to abstract understanding by Year 4, but will still benefit by using concrete materials.
- Concrete materials, including manipulatives, board games and more.
We encourage using:
- a formal maths program
- Maths drills in times tables
- reading living maths books. Maths concepts and skills are integrated within the storylines.
