Of Flood and ..
Dorothy Mackellar author of ‘My Country’ had it correct when she wrote:
“Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold -”
We have had the drought (still do) and the fire now it was time for the flood. The last week has brought incredible lightning and hail storms and torrential rains. Monday saw another massive downpour and afterwards we saw more water on our property than since we moved here nearly a year ago.
The children were delighted to find that where the dam was overflowing and the road and paddocks were covered with water, they were able to body surf over the paddocks.
Hours of fun were spent here and again two days later when we received a second downpour.
All the water then literally poured down the creek, the seasonal creek that trickles along in many places barely covering the mud was now running the highest we’ve ever seen it.
It was now reminding me of the white water rapids.
There was to be no crossing the creek at our usual place where I normally wheel the pram over and don’t even wet my sneakers.
“An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.”
Yep, that sums it up:)

All that water is a great sight, no doubt! The children must be having simply fabulous fun!
Doesn’t seem bizarre that we can be in a bad drought and still everything is green…it is like that here too.

It is strange, we’re not as bad off as some areas though.
