Whistle Man

Description

‘On a cold, clear Saturday in 1874, Ned Kelly rode into Beechworth and changed my life. I was fifteen then, and finished with school – wishing I could grow taller and heavier overnight and sprout an instant beard. Ned was four years older, and already the tough bushman I wanted to be.’
Young Garrett Clancy is an orphaned Irish teenager raised by a male family friend on a selection in the Woolshed Valley near Beechworth. He is drawn into the active Kelly gang sympathiser network and leaves home in bitterness. Riding with the Gang, hard bushman’s work, a love of the bush, camaraderie, hero worship and the need for survival all play a part in his growth to maturity. As the gang’s ‘Whistle Man’ or ‘Cockatoo’, he experiences violence, grief, loss and betrayal, but comes to eventual personal reconciliation.
