Eureka Stockade
Description
In 1851 gold was discovered in Ballarat. People came from all over Australia and even from overseas, in the hope of finding their fortune, The Governor decided that all miners must pay a mining licence fee of thirty shillings a month—whether they found gold or not. The events which followed ended in a battle known as the Eureka Stockade. It retains a significant place in Australian history.
