Leap Into Literature – Around the World
Our previous efforts ironed out the wrinkles in our organising and the past fortnight saw us in a settled rhythm. Although we did take a few days off for socialising, not something we lightly do preferring to leave socialising for afternoons. However at this stage of my pregnancy I’m ‘knackered’ by the afternoon, but as I’ve been a hermit and have been ignoring everyone, I really needed to catch up with a few friends, afterall socialising is important too. Our best days are when we start our lessons at 8.30am, for various reasons though we kept starting late, therefore skipping our ‘Gathering Time‘. Not a great idea, not only does Gathering Time…

Focus on the Nativity
Are you clicking away on your library reservation sites yet, searching for Christmas titles? Here are a few more ideas for you, be sure to check out our bumper list for more titles. The Last Straw – Fredrick K Thury Hoshmakaka, is a proud but old camel, he is chosen to perform a very special task, to carry the wise men’s gifts to the new baby king in Bethlehem. On the way Hoshmakaka is given other gifts to take to the new king, the burden is nearly too great for the old camel. Absolutely, hilarious and a firm family favourite. 5 Star Bright Christmas: An Angel Remembers – Andrew Clements An…

Monthly Memories – March 2012
Inspired by my enjoyment of Angela’s Choice Time and Learning in Review posts, I’m joining in Kylie‘s Monthly Memories, a great way to commit our memories to ‘paper’ each month. Endeavouring to capture the learning highlights of the past three weeks. Our greatest achievement was our Mega Mapping. The evident enthusiasm with which this project was received was heartening. Truly, to see our children focus for six hours straight, mapping and creating flags for every African nation was impressive! Best of all they now know and can locate each African nation. We endeavoured to make consistent, steady progress in Maths, Science, Language Arts and the Humanities, and for the most part have, however the past month consisted of…

Celebrating Advent
Today is the second Sunday of Advent and we are finally organised. Our celebrations have evolved over years and it is only with careful planning that I manage to achieve anything, even then we sometimes start late:) The Advent Calendars are up; the one on the left has doors to open daily, with Scripture passage and picture behind. We have been using this for years now. The hessian pockets we introduced last year, I insert felt figures into each pocket, then the children take in turns to place that day’s figure on the felt sheet. By Christmas Day the nativity scene will be in place. All nativity sets are…

7 Quick Takes Friday (Vol 2)
1Our first week back at lessons concludes. For the first time ever in all of our years of homeschooling I am completely happy with what I had planned. Generally speaking at this time I would be re-writing our routine, re-adjusting plans, seeking where I can pare down. Instead I am very happy with the routine we found last term and am looking at the happy situation of perhaps being able to expect even more from the children. 2 It is time to confess that I have been very undisciplined in my resolutions to exercise and NOT snack. I keep wondering if I should be bold enough to join Jessica at…

February I’m a Groovy Mother Hen March This week I have re-introduced an idea we have used before, personal checklist sheets. April I know Holy Week was three weeks ago, I’m a little late posting what we got up to. May For the past six years we have been fortunate to have the Latin Mass offered at our annual homeschool…
