    Overcoming Social Awkwardness

We’re firm believers in community involvement. Community involvement may look different for each family/individual, reflecting interests and beliefs.  It may include Church, homeschool groups, sport, drama, political groups, volunteer, work place etc.  Studies support that people are much happier when they belong to and are involved in a community.  Not only have we seen the importance of putting down roots within our smaller, comfortable groups but we have seen the benefits of participating within the wider community. Social skills are taught at home and through interaction with the family and the wider community, we have a duty to ensure we model, instil and insist on good social skills for our…

    Leaping into Literature

Next week our holidays draw to a close and we begin the final term of the year.  As I contemplated what direction I wished our studies to take in the next 10 week block I knew I needed to be realistic, we have three indisputable factors that create a major impact.  I am now in my final trimester with baby due two days before term ends (and babies have their own timetables), Advent begins in December bringing its own rhythm, and it is spring/summer which means extreme heat, distraction and pleas for more swimming time!! Yet I am determined that we conclude the year well, stretching abilities and learning deeply…

    Homeschool Camp – 13th Year

Last week saw us once again enjoying our annual homeschool camp. Three of our children were blessed to make their Sacraments, what a wonderful day.  We enjoyed many team building activities and daily Mass   and Benediction.  As well as catechetical groups, beach play, walking along the headlands, concert night and many hours of socialising.  Another wonderful year, Deo Gratias.

A Day in the Life of a Homeschooled Teenager

Joining in the Homeschool High School carnival hosted this month by Theresa over at Lapz Home Learning. The following is a glimpse of  ‘A Day in Our Life’, this ‘day’ I focused only on our teens, and in particular their academic pursuits.  Randomly I selected a Thursday to record, was it a typical day?  In some respects yes and yet not.  This year Einstein(16) spends the majority of his studies focusing on his Open Uni Course, although on the day selected he elected to spend all of his study time on his Open Uni, other days he alternates between his subjects,  which have been pared down to allow for his new workload.  Was…

    Leaving Home

Hard to believe it was only a month ago that Carpenter left home, it seems much longer than that, so much has happened since.  The day he left was hard, at least for those left at home, just as it was when Anna Maria left, leaving days don’t get easier with subsequent children. Prior to Carpenter leaving life became a huge rush, there was much to fit in, sitting for his STAT test only days prior to departure was the major emotional focus, plus fare-welling his regular commitments, adding in a few new social events and a surprise party organised by his friends, well done J & J!  With plenty of last minute rushing about including clothes…

    Keeping Records

This month’s Homeschool High School Carnival is hosted by Creating With Wisdom and I’m chatting about …..Record Keeping  In the early days of our home education journey I would buy a business diary every year with half an A4 page of blank lines for each day, however on a good week I only managed to write one or two entries.  After a few years of feeling like a record keeping failure, I began buying blank notebooks and aimed to write one entry summation at the conclusion of each week.  Whilst that didn’t always happen I no longer had blank days accusing me, mostly I managed to write at the end…
