Mega List of Catholic Picture Books

Reading picture books together is not only enjoyable, is it an easy way to enhance our children’s Faith, one of my favourite pastimes with our children. I’d like to share our Mega List of Catholic Picture Books with you, this list focuses mainly on Saints picture books with a miscellaneous round up at the end. I haven’t included Bible books, that list is forthcoming, nor does this list include Lenten/Easter and Advent/Christmas books, they can be found here, as can previous posts focusing on the Life of a Saint series and a review of books for March. I am quite selective in my choices and spend hours reading reviews such as…

    Finding Grace

Finding Grace – Laura Pearl Last year I was delighted when I won a copy of Finding Grace written by my friend Laura. Most excitedly it arrived just in time to be tucked into my hospital bag along with the Tim Tams (chocolate coated biscuits). As all mummas know, essentials for a stay in the maternity ward include chocolate and a brand new book to savour, for those moments when your newborn is asleep and you are slowly going mad looking at the walls of the maternity ward. Finding Grace will always be part of my memories of Bella’s birth, as in the 20 hours between Bella’s birth and when we booked…

    Catholic Picture Books – March

An easy way to celebrate the liturgical year is through reading books. We are blessed to have collected many stories of various saints, mostly short stories and chapter books.  Slowly our picture book collection is growing including a few saints stories. Sharing here our collection for the month of March, if you know of any others to recommend for this month please share! March 5th – St Kieren St Ciaran The Tale of a Saint of Ireland I have a brother Kieren so I was particularly excited to find this book. St Ciaran of Saigir was a hermit who lived in the 6th Century and was the first Irish born…

Catholic Picture Books – Life of a Saint Series

Slowly we are building a wonderful collection of quality picture books to encourage the children to know and love their Faith.   Recently we purchased four books from the Life of a Saint Series, published by Ignatius/Magnificat.   I highly recommend this series!! 5 star quality,  ‘meaty’ and accurate with lovely watercolour illustrations. They are long picture books, divided into small ‘chapters’ but can be easily read in one sitting. The best saints books we have seen for younger children, happily for us most of these are our children’s patron saints. John Marie Vianney: The Holy Cure of Ars John Vianney, from a devout family who attended underground Masses heard…

    Preparation for Confirmation

Whilst preparing Jack Jack to receive his First Confession and First Holy Communion we have also been preparing Princess(11) and Jelly Bean (9) to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. As I’ve shared previously we take this opportunity to prepare our children for the reception of their Sacraments as amongst the most precious responsibilities as Catholic parents entrusted to us. Preparing a child for her Confirmation involves discussion, study and spiritual preparation.  Princess and Jelly Bean are our fifth and sixth children to prepare for the reception of Confirmation and we have a fairly established program in place now.  Though this is the first time we have prepared a child as young as…

    Preparation for First Holy Communion

Whilst preparing our son to receive his First Reconciliation we have also been preparing him for the reception of his First Holy Communion which will be a few months following. As I shared before we take this opportunity to prepare our children for the reception of their Sacraments as amongst the most precious responsibilities as Catholic parents entrusted to us. Preparing a child for his First Holy Communion involves discussion, study and spiritual preparation.  Jack Jack is our seventh child to prepare for his First Holy Communion and we have a fairly established program in place now.  Sharing here in the hope to help other families in the same situation. You…

    Preparation For First Confession

For the past several months we have been preparing our son to receive the Sacrament of his First Reconciliation. Preparing our children for the reception of their Sacraments is amongst the most precious responsibilities as Catholic parents entrusted to us. Preparing a child for First Reconciliation involves lots of discussion, study and prayer.  As Jack Jack is our seventh child to prepare for his Sacraments we have a well rehearsed ‘game plan’ by now.  Sharing it here in the hope that it may be helpful for other families in the same situation. Confirmation Resources/Plans

Later this year Michelangelo will be making his Confirmation at our Homeschool Camp; with our Bishop’s blessing we prepare our children ourselves.  I have total confidence in preparing our little ones for First Confession/First Holy Communion, however, despite ‘preparing’ three children to date for Confirmation I still struggle in feeling confident I have imparted all I need to.  Point of fact is; what do I really need to impart?  As ages of Reception vary greatly around the country and globe, resource content reflect this, I haven’t found a blueprint that sets it out clearly. For Michelangelo’s three older siblings I’ve used  Spreading and Defending the Faith – Image of God Series; parts…

    Sacramental Preparation

This year Jelly Bean will be making/receiving her First Confession and First Holy Communion.  We are in the blessed position of being able to prepare our children ourselves.  The majority of the resources we’re using I have used before to prepare her older siblings, although I’m adding a few new titles this time around.. The New St Joseph First Communion Catechism – Fr Lovasik I have used this little book with all my children, a great little gem to make certain I have covered all bases.   Ten Eager Hearts – Sister of Notre Dame An OOP gem; each story contains incredibly inspiring stories of children preparing for their FHC…
