City Cousins Come to Visit
Last Weekend we were blessed to have PC’s brother, wife and children visit for four days:) We were very excited as they have never stayed with us before. Every day the children played from dawn till well after dusk. Country cousins introduced their city cousin to the delights of mud cuisine and making homemade lemonade with homegrown lemons and copious amounts of sugar. Many an hour was spent playing in the tree house down in the bush. (This impressive construction was made by Michelangelo and Uncle Dominic) Note cousin S. standing next to Jem, he is a couple of months younger but a whole head taller. On the last night…

Roof Finished, Milling Decking
I’ve been rather quiet on updating progress, but we have still been working. Sarking has been nailed on, this is the sight out of my kitchen window. This weekend we were determined to finish the roof, so many ‘not quite finished’ jobs were burdensome. We, well PC and Koala finished the end of the hip roof! And they screwed down the ridge capping! Note the sarking has been done on this end of the house too, courtesy of PC and Princess. This photo doesn’t do the ridge capping justice, but it looks great! Not as great as this young lady though:) The majority of our time has been spent milling…

Taking Shape
Being a builder’s assistant doesn’t mean one can’t dress prettily. It doesn’t hinder the ability to work at all:) Due to rain progress on roofing the end section has slowed. Although we did manage to nail down the sarking and battens. (It’s currently covered with a tarp and I forgot to take photos beforehand) We took the opportunity to turn our attention to installing the rest of the windows. Big windows, letting in lots of light and air I can see I’ll be spending alot of time just looking at the view:) I believe I provided my boys with lots of amusement over my nervousness of dropping one of these…

We Have Some Windows!
Another busy housebuilding weekend. PC spent one morning trimming the ends of the trusses to a standard size for eaves. I foresee more slow progress with the hip roof ahead. Progress of a much faster nature were the windows. Bathroom window with frosted glass. Toilet window is also in. The girls bedroom window. The two younger girls that is, Koala is going to be having her own room again. Taking shape, looking more and more ‘houselike.’ Some cutie’s who visited on a break from their cafe. Don’t the entwined arms just make you smile.

The Windows Have Arrived!

Roofing Continues – Tedious
Last Saturday, PC and I were up before 6am determined to have the fascia boards up in a matter of a few hours. As it happened this was just not meant to be. Not only did attaching the fascia brackets take longer than estimated but PC still had the valleys on the porch to finish. He continually muttered that there was sure to be some secret tradies method that was faster, but not being in the know he had to plod along. The children spent some of the morning fencing with our friend Dave B. in an effort to keep some escapee cattle in. (The cattle belong to Dave) The…

The Roofing Iron Goes On
Progress has slowed way down; by Thursday last week PC was ‘knackered,’ he went back to work for a rest. (He works for council;) On the weekend we finally managed to line the roof with sarking. Having a hip roof has slowed progress down dramatically as PC follows the truss plan. It’s a bit of a learning curve. We still haven’t finished. We did however complete laying iron on one side of the house!!:) (We’re praying we don’t have a storm before the weekend) They (PC and my brother Dominic) also built the front porch on the weekend. Dominic has now left:(:( and PC is continuing building valleys and the…

Trusses Are On:)
Many hands make light work. Before we could start we had to build part of the end verandah for the hip roof. It slowed progress down. By the end of Saturday we had trusses started at both ends all set for a smoother run the next day. By Sunday afternoon trusses are on and it all now looks like a real house:):):) Today’s cutie and another. Monday and Tuesday has been spent attaching the cyclone bracing. Two of the boys left today, thank you for all your help boys, we enjoyed having you.

The Walls Are Finished !
We were up bright and early Thursday morning to start the walls, anxiously keeping one eye on the weather. We had lost Wednesday to rain (So far we’ve had 104mm this last week 4inches for our international cousins). Having the boys help has made an enormous difference to what we otherwise would have achieved. They make a great team. “Thank you boys”:) The final frame clicks in;) By the end of the day the walls were completed! Today’s cutie:) And another just because I couldn’t resist. Friday was spent bracing and plating the walls. The ‘fast jobs’ are always followed by slower work.
