    Living in a Little Home

Throughout our married life our homes have consisted of two extremes; very small or very large.  We have owned three homes, the first we reinvented and sold (a story for another day), the last two(8 sq metres-Aust) we renovated and then added huge (house size) extensions. Reflecting on Multiple Mum’s deliberatings; sell and buy larger, extend, or to make better use of current space?  I thought I’d share some of my thoughts and experiences. Perhaps you’ve looked at moving but have decided it is currently best to consolidate financially and re-visit moving in a few years.  Perhaps you’ve considered extending but finances also dictate it is best to wait.  Or your current location is not…

    The Real McCoy

One item that we mourned, when we moved to this property, that was left behind in our town yard was our clothesline.  We were the proud owners of a genuine Hills Hoist.  A huge metal and wire clothesline with long arms spanning nearly half our yard.  Large enough to hold ample loads of clothes and  strong enough to withstand children swinging on it as they swung madly in circles hanging off its arms. Alas all we were able to purchase for here was a modern Hills Hoist,  of the aluminium and plastic lines. These modern lines are vastly inferior in quality to the old and for the last few years I have regretted not…

    Found: One Book Stand!

On a recent weekend we made our way to the back of a local op-shop to deposit a box. Afterwards on our way out of the alley we noticed a metal stand at the back of a shop which had recently closed its doors. The stand had obviously been thrown out so PC quickly stopped the car and announced, “That would make a great bookstand.” (Isn’t he just perfect?:) We bought it home and loaded it with books, the visual display is rather attractive. Alas the slots are not wide enough for picture books, it houses only chapter books. A great way to entice everyone with hither to unnoticed books.…

    Grain Free Cereal

As I’ve shared before, finding grain free breakfast cereal has been one of our biggest challenges.   Spunky Coconut’s Vanilla Almond Strawberry Granola has been a blessing.  Kelly has no idea of how grateful we are. (Thank you very much Kelly!!) We have varied the recipe a little and changed the name. Almond/Walnut Granola. Soak 2 cups of walnuts & 1.5 cups chopped almonds for about 8 hours. Rinse and strain. Add : 1 cup shredded coconut 1/2 cup almond flour 1 cup applesauce 1 tsp of honey 1/4 cup sugar 1 tbsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cinnamon twist sea salt Dehydrate overnight, until dry and crunchy. Top with tinned peaches Serve…

    Ingrained Domestic Habits

Last week the contestants of The Block cooked up a storm, with Katrina and Amie sharing a family recipe handed down from their grandmother. “This recipe has been handed down from our grandmother, to our mother, to us and we’ll hand it to our children; from generation to generation.” Recipes are often passed from “generation to generation” but so too are cleaning tips, management style and household habits.  Often many of the habits that we take into our households are ingrained from our own childhood, or sometimes a desire to ‘improve the model.’  What one household is adamant that it, must be done ‘this way, ‘ another family may be relaxed about…

    Soap Suds and Pegs

The undeniable fact is, eleven people generate a large, consistent amount of washing.  To ensure the laundry is maintained, a workable system needs to be implemented.  Family dynamics impact dramatically on what is needed and how it is carried out.  The number and ages of family members, family lifestyles and the seasons create variation.  Over the years our methods have been organic, changing and expanding with our family.  Babies, toilet training, winter, summer, sports, farming, building etc all have created variation. Washing is a task I enjoy, an effortless way to change the dirty to clean, and time in the sunshine hanging the wash is always refreshing.  Whilst folding is a little more mundane, I…

    A Chippy in the Making

For months the fronts of three drawers have been off, all was needed was a visit to the Kitchen Shop to buy new hinges.  Truly I shouldn’t have taken so long to attend to the problem, sometimes we make a simple problem larger than it is. PC has long been hoping for some tradies in the family, lately it appears that Princess may well grant his wish. She has been tending to every carpentry job.

    Preparing for Battle

The symptoms arrived suddenly this afternoon, no warning at all.  I walked up the hall and instantly knew.  I went from a leisurely stroll through the house to instant command mode in two seconds flat.  Within another three seconds I had a battle plan… It was time to declutter!  The entire house from one end to the other was going to be transformed. The next item on the agenda was to marshal the troops.  There my plans slowed a little, the troops were less than enthusiastic. Undaunted I enlisted the ‘Major’s’ help.  He devised a plan he knew they couldn’t resist. My family have been most willing to support me in…

    Grain Free Breakfast Ideas

One of the most difficult challenges of going ‘mostly grain free’ has been to find breakfast foods for our teen.  (I’m making home-made muesli for the rest of the family.)  Many of the grain free blogs, sites and books suggest leftovers, meat, eggs etc.  Truthfully in a family of ten we rarely have leftovers, teen only likes fried eggs, and there is only so much meat one can eat. Besides the biggest issue is our teen wants breakfasts that are quick and easy, wanting something reminiscent of cereal.  Finally we have hit upon a plan that includes ease and variety and that pleases teen and budget. Bacon & Eggs, twice…
