A Pool For Christmas
This Christmas we rather ambitiously decided to buy a pool, due to budget constraints it was decided that a 2nd hand above ground find from ebay would be the more prudent option. After laying out and marking for size, we hired a dingo digger to take off the topsoil, however a malfunction with the digger decided us on the course of digging it all by hand! What back breaking hard labour and whilst all had a turn of helping, the majority of the work was undertaken by Einstein, you’re awesome son!! With Carpenter coming in as second backstop! After the soil was removed it was time to add, spread and…

Lining Wet Area Rooms
A few days prior to Christmas we took delivery of a truck load of gyprock and wet area sheeting. This was to be our project for PC’s Christmas break, 14 days off and this is what he had to look forward too;) First area to tackle has been the wet area rooms, 5 in total. We’ve been insulating with a new product, made out of recycled glass, it comes in uncut rolls to be cut into size, this means we have far less wastage and it doesn’t itch. First room to be completed was our ensuite, I am so looking forward to having my own bathroom. The main bathroom was the next…

Plumbing – Roughing In
Exciting moments here!! We have had the plumber in and the the roughing in has been completed; bathroom, powder room, toilet, ensuite and laundry are now ready to be sheeted. Just imagine the luxury of having more than one shower, the fun of having real wet area rooms. It looks more and more like a ‘proper house’:):)

Laying About
Whilst it rained over the last couple of weekends we turned our attention to inside projects, it was time to start laying floorboards again. As we are using salvaged second hand timber it is filthy work, cleaning enough boards for two rooms takes a whole weekend. Previously we had used a homemade ‘gizmo’ to clean inside the grooves and the tongue, this time however PC hit upon the brilliant idea of using a saw to clean out the inside of the groove, much faster and cleaner. The younger half of ‘The Team’ and I, were on cleaning detail and floor preparation each of the joins had to be sanded flat and the…

Roof Line Changes
Last month we completed another major project, replacing the temporary skillion (flat) roof between the ‘two houses’. As with many projects, one task needs to be completed before another can begin. The deck had to be laid so the posts could be go up, the edge of the roof on the original house removed, including the TV antenna (we haven’t missed having TV yet), the beams were then lifted and bolted into place. We then removed the existing ‘temporary’ roof (temporary as in two years;) …

A Real House!
On Saturday we were rather excited to begin painting the front exterior wall, our biggest expanse of wall, and the first noted as you travel down the driveway. The warm tones look far more inviting than the white undercoat The time passed quickly with the lovely company Our next decision is, what colour to paint the front door? Now it is starting to look like a real house.

All Covered Up
With two exterior walls successfully painted we moved onto painting the walls surrounding the deck. With only two short walls and large glass doors, each coat only took an hour and a half. Once again I had the help of team Michelangelo and Princess. The above blue area is waiting for the roof trusses which will cover the deck. Hopefully going up in the next couple of months. Really loving the colour. Children are getting quite handy with the brushes and roller. Still some jobs to complete around the deck but the painting makes it look so much more ‘finished’. Now, to-do-list … roof trusses, steps, sitting benches, decking oil, posts,…

On A Roll
Inspired by the successful outcome of the painting of the end verandah we decided to continue on our painting roll, and chose the side wall as our next project. After preparation we decided we could manage to paint both coats in one day, due to the size and numbers of windows this was possible. Once again we had the help of ‘the team,’ this time Princess(8) and Jack Jack(6) were also keen to join in the fun. By the day’s conclusion we were racing the sun to finish the second coat, succeeding just in time. A couple of times a day I find myself standing outside admiring the painted walls. To have two…

Watching Paint Dry
With the decking completed on the end verandah we no longer had any impediments to painting the eaves and wall on the northside. The past weekend saw a primer coat on the eaves fortunately the team were in high spirits and set to work in a spirit of high jinks. By the end of the afternoon they had not only rolled on the primer coat they had also painted the first ceiling coat, Gentle Touch (Dulux). Once the second coat was dry and the walls washed down with sugar soap we were keen to begin painting the first coat on the walls, we had chosen, Sandbank (Dulux) and are thrilled with our choice.…
