    Laying the Hallway

Back in May when we finished flooring the Poolroom, we instantly turned our attentions to flooring the Hallway. Whilst the hallway is only narrow and not a large area to cover and you’d assume it wouldn’t take long to floor, it’s width created it’s own issues. As per our standard practice flooring involves a rhythm of; placing green strapping to the floor for easier sliding of boards, gluing the boards, knocking the tongue and grooves together and then secret nailing. It wasn’t long though before we reached the other side of the hallway and ran out of swinging space for the hammer. Then it became time to get creative,…

He Asked ‘Will You..?’ – She Replied ‘Yes!’

Mid June our Carpenter asked his girlfriend Rose to Marry him, and she said Yes!! We are thrilled, Rose suits our boy so well. They have been dating for a few years now, so we’ve had the time to get to know Rose well, she is a lovely young lady and we are indeed blessed to be gaining such a beautiful new daughter. They are planning on marrying next year, so there is plenty of excitement here and phone calls back and forth. See that darling ring on Rose’s finger (yes wrong finger, it was waiting for resizing) our romantic Carpenter designed it himself and surprised her!!   It truly is…

    Bushfire, Evacuation & Desolation

It’s nearly a fortnight now since The Fire began and we’ve only just regained our equilibrium. It began as an ordinary weekday and finished in a whole ‘nother way. Wednesday 15th – Feast of the Assumption Actually it wasn’t an ordinary day it was the Feast of the Assumption, so we began the day by attending Mass. When we arrived home at 10.30am we noticed fire in the distance, thought no more of it and proceeded with our day. By 3.30pm however we were certainly paying attention. Huge clouds of smoke were billowing up and ash was falling, it was quite obvious the bushfire was close, only a kilometre away. Planes…

7 Quick Takes: ‘Back in the Saddle’

Head on over to This Ain’t the Lyceum to read more 7QT for this week. 1 Yes, yes I’m back writing 7 Quick Takes after a four year hiatus from 7QT.  If I have any readers left, which would surprise me 😉 you would have noticed I’ve hardly written anything for the past year. When tossing around ideas on how to get out of my blogging slump I decided committing to 7 Quick Takes, something I used to do regularly back in my blogging hey day could be a great way to get the creative juices flowing. So why haven’t I being writing? There is the standard, “life is so full”…

    Loungeroom Receives Floorboards

After laying floorboards in our Great Hall and Pool Room we immediately moved onto laying the loungeroom floor. I’m just a month behind in sharing pictures 😉  I was particularly excited to give this room a makeover as it had become my least favourite room in the house. It was doing double duty as a loungeroom and toyroom, laying floorboards sprang a whole plan into action. The advantage of flooring rooms ‘back to back’ means that we have a great rhythm flowing.  This time we broke the Crew into ‘tag teams’; Team 1 and Team 2, and whilst this ensured PC and I had regular breaks from bending over the nail gun, there…

    Creating A ‘Trampoline’ Garden

Most years PC and interested children plant a garden (I fall into the black thumb category).  Our garden however has never really thrived, unrelated to PC’s dedication and talent. More to do with it’s location as the garden was tucked away in an area of insufficient sunshine. It was long on PC’s list to relocate but as a man possessed of a long ‘honey do’ list and with little time, giving his garden the attention it needed was a dream but not a priority.   Jack Jack (11) is passionate about gardening, following in the footsteps of his father and paternal grandmother. It was JJ’s persistent ‘encouragement’ that bumped the…

    Flooring The ‘Pool’ Room

Our great project of laying floorboards throughout the house continues apace. Inspired by our success of flooring the dining and learning rooms the weekend before. A couple of weekends ago we pressed on and floored the ‘Pool’ Room. Pool Room? Simply the first room as you enter the house wherein a pool table resides. Jelly Bean(13yrs), was our constant offsider all day, she never left our sides, so proud of her! She anticipated our every move and worked to assist our team of, mainly three, to be as seamless as possible (yes I’m part of that team but behind the camera each time). Having recently floored the previous two rooms…

Dining & Learning Rooms Gain Floorboards

Two weeks ago we turned our attention to a new project on the never ending Owner Builder list; to finish laying floorboards throughout the house. Firstly the area needed to be prepared, eight and a half years of grime needed to be removed so the glue would hold, and joins needed to be sanded down evenly. Prior to beginning this project I was a little daunted as it was the first time we’d floored without any of our older boys, we would be relying primarily on Girl Power. I couldn’t be prouder of our Girls, they worked in sync, anticipated moves to keep it all flowing and wielded that nail gun…

    My Daybook: 12th March, 2018

Outside my window… the sky is slowly lightening, sunrise comes later now as we move further into autumn I am thankful… for my children. Bass said to me in a serious tone this week, “Mum, you and Dad are so lucky! ‘Cause you have ten children!” Yes Son we are indeed incredibly lucky 🙂 I am thinking… about Bass’ excitement as he learns to read, he is just zooming along, I’m rather excited myself. Teaching my children to read has consumed vast hours of our homes education journey, and yet I love it, I’m rather sad that this is my second last time to have the privilege of teaching one…
