A Dream Of A Linen Press
Twelve months is long enough for any girl to have her linen shelves highly visible in her dining hall don’t you think? Embarrassingly it’s not even as if I kept it neat all the time, the messy truth is, it often looked like this! Before visitors were due that is, the visitors at least got to look at tidy shelves. When I uttered the words on Saturday to my darling Prince Charming, “I’ve reached my limit, I want the linen cupboard out of the dining hall” He immediately responded with, “Let’s plan how to design the linen press and I’ll build it tomorrow.” That’s all it took! He stopped tiling…

Verandah With A View
We’ve just completed a major building project, the addition of a verandah running the length of the house. Let’s travel back to see where we started. In August 2012 we began laying out the bearers and joists. We ‘divided’ the verandah in half, and nailed and bolted down the foundations. Then began laying the boards. Carpenter had not yet left for College and was still living at home, he was a major contributor to this section. We began this project after completing the deck and the end verandah. It took up the majority of that August, it was a long, hot job. We completed half the verandah, oiled the boards and then…

Great Hall and Hallway, Plastered & Painted
Plastering the hallway and Great Hall (dining/kitchen area) has taken many, many months to complete. It wasn’t a high priority, considered a ‘wet weather job’, so many other projects were rated higher, and achieved first. We plastered a wall in the Great Hall in January 2011 when my brother visited and taught us how plaster. Then later began plastering the hallway in October 2011. For years we lived without gyprock on the walls of the Great Hall, we were thrilled when we were finally able to turn our attention to lining the walls of the Great Hall. June this year we focused in earnest on completing this task. Cornices make such…

Our Very Own Games Room
We sheeted the games room months ago and since then PC has been intermittently plastering the games room, our walk in robe and the hallway. A huge section of the house to tackle all at once. Last weekend PC’s hard labour finally came to fruition and he was able to paint the games room. Such an exciting moment:) He has done a magnificent job of plastering this ceiling! He was so determined to finish this room he painted late into the night. To see this room that has essentially been a timber yard and catch all for building supplies become a ‘real room’ has been thrilling to say the least. Just looking…

Learning Room Sneak Preview
Monday morning I spontaneously decided to begin the learning room revamp and so we began painting. My plan was to wait until all was complete before revealing, however I can’t wait to share with you and thought I’d give a sneak preview. Fresh paint and a smaller table thus far.

Learning Room Needing a Revamp
We are very excited to finally have a learning room once again, after 6 years of makeshift quarters. All three of our learning areas flow off each other, the first door on the right takes you into the study, and the second door into the library. I’m contemplating pulling down walls and opening up the library and learning room to one another, though that plan has pros and cons. Actually the back wall (with the display shelves) will be coming down and opening up to the room beyond. Whilst it is true that a dedicated learning area isn’t necessary to home educate we have found over the years that we…

O Frabjous Day!!
Monday was a frabjous day! One we had worked towards for so long, we now have electricity!!!:):):) So exciting:):) Difficult to source but we finally found wall lights with switches on them, not only can they be turned off on the base, but also via the main switch as we walk past in the hallway. Installed in the children’s bedrooms and the loungeroom. What a pleasure it will be to have fans again in the summer:) Let’s just admit that some summer days have been rather… uncomfortable. How wonderful to have ‘switch lights’🙂 (5) I love being able to stand in front of my linen cupboard searching at night with…

Sheeting the Games Room
Our games room is sure to be the most popular room in the house. A room designed to house the pool table, playstation/wii with screen, board games and a games/card table. The ideal hang out and a perfect excuse to invite friends over. Finalising the gyprock sheeting in this area brings us a step closer to being able to use this room. Currently it still holds the piles of timber, so we can’t quite move in. The timber piles were a little challenge, however we managed to work around them. For so long this has been a ‘catch all’ for building equipment, it is a welcome change to see clean walls:) Looking…

Gyprocking The Great Hall
We are racing down the ‘home run’ now! Last weekend we gyprocked the Great Hall. Only one more room to finish gyrocking and the whole house will be finished:) First the roof battens have to be screwed down. Then the sheeting goes up on the ceiling. So many times over the last few years we have been very grateful we purchased our own gyrock hoist. Next the insulation is measured, cut and installed. Then time to measure, cut, glue and screw the gyprock into place. Time to brag about how impressed I am with PC’s precision, he never makes a mistake. Likely because he always measures twice before cutting and…
